How to Understanding LED Technology

You might have seen these tiny lights in blue, red and green colors. These are actually LED's or Light-emitting Diodes.

These days, LED technology has advanced in such a way that they will push forward the multitude of applications that LED's have been known for.

LED Technology: The Basics

To have a deeper understanding of what LED technology is all about, here is a quick definition. LED is actually a semiconductor diode which emits light when current is applied to it.

Take a typical mobile phone charger as an example. Once you plug it in, there will be a blue or red indicator light which signals that the mobile phone is charging. This is just one of the many applications of LED technology in which Light-emitting Diodes are used.

As compared to other types of light-emitting devices, LED's do not waste energy. This is because LED's use the 'cold light technology' - where not a great deal of heat is produced by the device.

Applications of LED Technology

Again, LED technology has numerous advantages over other forms of lighting, making it suitable for a number of unique applications.

Here are a few examples:

  * Ultra-violet LED's are used in water sterilization.
  * Ultra-violet LED's are used in disinfection.
  * LED's in general are used as a 'grow light' to enhance the growth of plants, imitating the rays of the sun to promote photosynthesis.

With more advancements in LED technology in the horizon, there is no doubt that this useful technology will continue to be used in a multitude of useful applications in the future.
